Popular Science in Russia and the West: Two Markets, Two Logics, Two Survival Modes

According to the most optimistic estimates, the total audience of popular science publications in Russia is only about 6 million people. That’s roughly 4% of the population. And this market in Russia today, it seems, is experiencing a crisis.

«To serve a criminal regime or not is a matter of conscience.» Alexey and Masha Moskalyov — on war, emigration, and moral choice

Last Saturday, the Paris resource center Espace Libertés Reforum Space hosted a presentation of Ksenia Kirillova’s poetry collection, illustrated by Masha Moskalyova, «A Hillock on Canvas.» This is the first release of the Most.Media publishing program, the first publication experience for the 16-year-old artist, and the first in-person meeting of all participants in the creative process. At the public talk, together with Masha’s father, Alexey Moskalyov, we discussed creativity in political emigration — as well as the circumstances that led all participants in this discussion into emigration: the war in Ukraine and the repression in Russia against its opponents. We are publishing an abridged transcript of our conversation for easier reading.

Russia is increasingly falling behind developed countries in terms of education. Is this a coincidence or a systemic policy?

From 2019 to 2024, the share of high school graduates entering universities in Russia dropped from 86% to 60%. In most developed countries during the same period, access to higher education continued to grow — since the modern economy demands increasingly complex skills.

Goodbye, America! Gorbachev’s «New Thinking» Lost to Trump’s MAGA

In January 1986, the newly elected General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, Mikhail Gorbachev, proposed that all countries in the world give up nuclear weapons. In 1988, in his book, he directly stated that universal human values are more important than class values. These ideas gave rise to the concept of «new thinking,» which changed much in international politics. Why didn’t these changes work, and why, forty years later, have we fallen into a historical abyss?

What does Russia’s future look like after Putin? Scientific Director of the Levada Center, Lev Gudkov, responds

Sociologist Lev Gudkov has been studying public attitudes in Russia since the time of Perestroika. In the late 1980s, he worked at the All-Union Center for the Study of Public Opinion, from which he left in the early 2000s along with Yuri Levada’s team. From 2006 to 2021, Gudkov headed the Levada Center—the largest independent organization conducting sociological surveys in Russia—and then became its scientific director. Both the Levada Center and Gudkov himself have been designated as foreign agents by the Russian Ministry of Justice. Drawing on years of sociological surveys of post-Soviet society and the historical experience of countries that went through fascism in the 20th century, we spoke with the renowned researcher about the most likely scenario for Russia’s future.

«Son, don’t trust this document—they will deceive you»

On December 5, 1994, Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum with three nuclear powers who guaranteed its security and independence in exchange for giving up its stockpile of nuclear weapons. This agreement was supposed to prevent any conflict between Ukraine and Russia. But it turned out to be a useless piece of paper.

«Put me back in prison!»: When patriotism turns into Stockholm syndrome

Dictatorships have a tendency to completely distort the phenomenon of patriotism. Natural human sympathies for the nature and culture of their country are replaced by demands for unconditional loyalty to the ruling regime. Saltykov-Shchedrin already noted this, reflecting on those who confuse the concepts of «Fatherland» and «Your Excellency.» Later, a grim Soviet joke appeared: when the state needs something from its citizens, it calls itself the «Motherland.» And always with a capital letter. Under such conditions, patriotism turns into a form of Stockholm syndrome, where hostages begin to sympathize with their captors.

Why Fyodor Bondarchuk Talks with Woody Allen

The Woody Allen case, who participated online in a certain Moscow film week and gave a video interview to Fyodor Bondarchuk, once again raised the question of moral and immoral behavior during a military and humanitarian catastrophe, about detachment from events and involvement in them, about toxicity—or, on the contrary, the necessity of cultural and interpersonal contacts.

«She sank». Twenty-five years after the sinking of the Kursk submarine, Russian society has forgotten this catastrophe

The twenty-fifth anniversary of the tragedy of the nuclear submarine cruiser K-141 Kursk in the Barents Sea passed unnoticed. No memorial ceremonies, solemn speeches, monument unveilings, or film premieres. On the anniversary of the explosion on the Kursk (August 12), if one believes his official website, the head of state only spoke by phone with Kim Jong Un and held a meeting on economic issues. The censored segment of Runet got away with a few concise publications, and some authors described what happened in August 2000 as an «accident».

Russia without sanctions: is it possible to start fresh

Let’s imagine for a moment that by some magical means Russia managed to get all sanctions lifted without exception, annexed all the territories Putin talks about, reduced the military budget, and began living as if nothing had happened. This is exactly what a huge number of people living in Russia dream of.

50 years ago, the Helsinki Accords changed the world. But not in the way their authors intended

In August 1975, in Helsinki, 35 countries from Europe and North America, from the USSR and the USA to Malta and Luxembourg, signed the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). This treaty became the pinnacle of the détente period (a policy of easing international tensions), when the West and the Soviet bloc tried to implement the principle of «peaceful coexistence» at least on one continent.

Satanism: Invented and Real. Why Putin Resembles Madonna More Than Reagan

Last week, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation declared the non-existent «International Satanists Movement» extremist. It's surprising that a phenomenon of Western pop culture like satanism still causes moral panic among Russian authorities.

Why being labeled a «foreign agent» in Russia is neither a «medal» nor a «recognition of merit»

Foreign agents, extremists, individuals cooperating with «undesirable organizations,» and other types of «enemies of the people.» In Russia, these labels are imposed weekly on writers, poets, journalists, scientists, civil activists, human rights defenders, and simply people with a conscience—along with criminal and administrative cases, inclusion in various lists, and outrageous legislative demands. Some call these statuses a «recognition of merit» and a special title to be proud of. I will try to explain why this is not the case.

«We thought we could wait out the war ‘under the Russians,’ but ended up in Stalinist Bolshevism.» On the 85th anniversary of the Soviet annexation of the Baltics

In recent years, some in the Russian public have been strongly tempted to engage in victim-blaming regarding the events of 1939-1940. The idea goes that the Baltic peoples chose their own fate: they signed the treaties, let the Red Army in, and voted for pro-Soviet candidates in elections. Who else can they blame for this but their own short-sighted and cowardly governments? Indeed, formally the Stalinist regime at the time did nothing that the authorities of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia did not allow. But in reality, the Soviet leadership fully understood the true meaning of these documents and procedures.

Cancellation of the RDIF, the shadow fleet operating as pirates, and other troubles for Russia from the new European sanctions

The eighteenth EU sanctions package is, as usual, mocked by Russian officials for its ineffectiveness. However, public skepticism is accompanied by rather active moves from the Kremlin. Is this just a coincidence? It seems not.
