In January 1986, the newly elected General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, Mikhail Gorbachev, proposed that all countries in the world give up nuclear weapons. In 1988, in his book, he directly stated that universal human values are more important than class values. These ideas gave rise to the concept of «new thinking,» which changed much in international politics. Why didn’t these changes work, and why, forty years later, have we fallen into a historical abyss?

«Most.Media,» in collaboration with the magazine «Region.Expert,» launches a regular weekly review of events occurring in the fields of regional politics, economy, and culture. For many Russian media, as well as for free Russian-language publications outside Russia, this topic often still seems secondary and provincial. But such a snobbish-centralist approach has repeatedly failed — throughout various historical changes, Russia’s geographical borders have shifted, and many former provinces of the empire became independent countries. If we aim to look to the future, some promising trends need to be tracked and analyzed today.
