Russian Anti-War Activist Vladislav Krasnov Arrested in the US During Routine ICE Visit
«It's not like I'm hiding — if the immigration court wants to find me, they can do it anywhere, if they want to,» Vladislav Krasnov told «Most» in an interview at the end of last year. A US federal court denied the active supporter of Alexei Navalny political asylum in March 2025, after he had already spent 444 days in American immigration detention centers in conditions close to torture. Now Vladislav is set to be deported to Russia, where he faces arrest.

Personal experience: a journalist goes to work at a cemetery
Khovanskoye Cemetery, January 27, two o'clock in the afternoon. A group of four people stands by a black minivan. They are dressed in identical black jackets and hats. Next to them, on metal trestles, is a four-sided coffin with no handles. People in work uniforms are nailing the base of the coffin. About 5 meters from the coffin—just one grave away—stand several gravediggers, ready to take the coffin in their hands and lower it into the grave. We only need to cover those 5 meters. But three out of the four people in black take turns falling, bumping the bottoms of the coffin into the grave fences. Only the fourth one managed to stay on his feet. That was me.

«You can’t outplay the secret services on their own turf.» A long conversation about the participants in the famous Sinyavsky and Daniel trial
Exactly 60 years ago, the USSR began the trial of writers Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel, which marked the beginning of the Soviet dissident movement. One of the prosecution witnesses at this trial was the Orientalist Sergei Khmelnitsky — the father of historian of Soviet secret services and «Most» columnist Dmitry Khmelnitsky. Dmitry himself was 12 years old at the time. A couple of years later, Dmitry learned that his father had been a secret NKVD informant, whose denunciation in the late 1940s led to the arrest and imprisonment of two of his friends. After being released during the Khrushchev Thaw, they publicly exposed Sergei Khmelnitsky, and all his close friends turned away from him. Among them was Andrei Sinyavsky. However, few people know that the famous writer himself was recruited by the NKVD at the same time as Khmelnitsky and continued to cooperate with the KGB. Dmitry tells how it all happened in his forthcoming book «Khmelnitsky, Sinyavsky, and the KGB.»

In four years, Russia has lost 20 times more people in Ukraine than the USSR did in ten years in Afghanistan
At the end of January, the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) published updated data on casualties in the Russia-Ukraine war. According to analysts’ estimates, the total number of killed, wounded, and missing amounts to 1.8 million people. Of these, 1.2 million are Russian losses, and 600,000 are Ukrainian losses.

«Is it a coincidence that the Russian guy bought a house in Palm Beach and knows everything?» The Russian Connection in the Epstein Dossier
One of the most talked-about topics around the world is the dossier on American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who for decades organized elite sex parties with billionaires and politicians. On July 6, 2019, this man, already convicted of pimping and involving minors in prostitution, was arrested on new sex trafficking charges. A month and four days later, Epstein was found dead in his jail cell; the official version is suicide. Many see his email archive as a basket of dirty laundry from a notorious matchmaker and pedophile who meticulously documented the sexual preferences of his high-profile clients. In reality, things are much more complicated.

«A Dangerous Idealist Ahead of His Time»: What Robespierre and Navalny Have in Common
Robespierre was a utopian who believed in lofty ideals and the possibility of free and just social change. This moral dimension of politics is almost an axiom underlying any discourse about revolution. Yet, his main «civil religion» remained faith in human virtue. That very idealism in politics is so lacking today.

The Doctrine of Russian Nationalists. What’s New?
Last week, the «Russian Volunteer Corps» finally published its program and ideological doctrine. «Finally»—because this nationalist formation, which switched sides to Ukraine in February 2022, has long called on the Russian opposition to unite. Of course, by default—under the banners of the RVC. In short, hopes for a proper evolution of Russian nationalists have not come true.

Russia Lost Its Wallet in Serbia: Its Oil and Gas Company NIS Went to Hungary and the UAE
For almost a year, Russia was engaged in selling the Serbian oil and gas company NIS, which is controlled by Gazprom. During this time, the actions of the Russian side brought Serbia to the brink of a fuel crisis. This story could completely change Russia’s role in the Balkans.

Emigration and Suicide: What You Need to Know to Prevent New Tragedies
In early January 2026, Russian journalist and emigrant Evgeny Safronov tragically died near Paris. This story exposed the problem of vulnerability among people experiencing prolonged stress and social isolation, which many emigrants face. We spoke with staff from the Reforum Help psychological support service about the signs of psychological distress and how to help yourself and others during such times.

Personal Experience: A Punk Girl Goes to Work as a Realtor in St. Petersburg
I wandered through neighborhoods of new developments, trying to at least convince myself that selling such a future to living, thinking people, with a 30-year mortgage, wasn’t a crime. I honestly tried to break myself and become a successful person against my own nature. Here’s how it went—and here’s how it ended.

Goodbye, America! Gorbachev’s «New Thinking» Lost to Trump’s MAGA
In January 1986, the newly elected General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, Mikhail Gorbachev, proposed that all countries in the world give up nuclear weapons. In 1988, in his book, he directly stated that universal human values are more important than class values. These ideas gave rise to the concept of «new thinking,» which changed much in international politics. Why didn’t these changes work, and why, forty years later, have we fallen into a historical abyss?

More than Two Thousand Hostages, Dozens of Victims, and Lies from the Security Services: 30 Years Since the Kizlyar and Pervomayskoye Terror Attack
In the winter of 1996, nearly twice as many hostages were taken in Kizlyar as in Budyonnovsk just six months earlier; in terms of sheer numbers, the terrorist attack in Dagestan remains the largest in Russian (and apparently world) history to this day. This crisis taught Russian ministers and generals that force is preferable to words, and any loss of life is better than losing face.

«If we are afraid, everything will disappear.» Annual memorial events for murdered Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova held in Moscow
One of the most high-profile political assassinations in modern Russian history took place on January 19, 2009. On that day, Stanislav Markelov, a lawyer from the Moscow Human Rights Center, and Anastasia Baburova, a freelance correspondent for Novaya Gazeta, were shot dead by an activist from the far-right group BORN (Combat Organization of Russian Nationalists). They were killed because they supported the anti-fascist movement. And a recent accomplice in this crime was recently released from prison.

«The Hardest Winter in Four Years of War»
Old New Year has passed, the Christmas holidays are over, and 2026 has fully come into its own. The wild start to the new calendar stretch—Nicolás Maduro’s nighttime flight, the resurgence of piracy in the Atlantic Ocean, and blood-soaked Iran—may have pushed into the background the fact that we have now been living for four years in the largest war in Europe in the last 80 years.

«Iranians have accumulated too much hopelessness; they no longer believe in their system»
Unprecedented mass anti-government protests continue in Iran—something never before seen in the history of the Islamic Republic. While Donald Trump makes vague promises to help the protesters and progressive Western public opinion remains silent, the number of Iranians killed by the regime may already be in the hundreds. Reliable information about the situation in the country is scarce: in Iran, it’s «tradition» to shut down the internet in such cases. Iran expert, Telegram channel author, and writer of «All Iran» Nikita Smagin (the Russian Ministry of Justice considers him a foreign agent) explains why the Islamic Revolution has erupted in mass protest, what the ayatollahs fear, and what lessons the Kremlin might draw from the situation in this eastern country.

The End of Illusions. In the very first days of the new year, the Kremlin suffered a series of painful blows from the US
First came the nighttime abduction of the friendly Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, then the boarding of two «shadow» tankers in the Atlantic, and now the announcement of «bone-crushing» sanctions that Congress had postponed all of last year. It seems incredible that less than two weeks ago, pro-government media in Russia were seriously anticipating a rapprochement between Moscow and Washington and predicting diplomatic isolation for Kyiv. The «spirit of Anchorage,» which Kremlin propaganda so eagerly inhaled last autumn, has completely dissipated by winter.

«What happiness it is that we live in this city.» A Report from New Year’s Moscow
In December 2025, Moscow began to be actively decorated for the New Year as part of the «Journey to Christmas» festival. Its prototype was the Strasbourg Christmas Market on Manezhnaya Square, which in December 2012 made a splash among Muscovites and visitors to the capital. After that, city hall decided to include the city’s Christmas celebration in the ongoing mega-festival «Moscow Seasons.» By 2026, however, little remained of Strasbourg and its Christmas traditions. But an imaginary Europe, now almost out of reach, still peeks through the New Year’s tinsel—just like other realities of recent years.
