Are we Rurikids? On the anniversary of the Varangians’ call to rule Rus

According to ancient chronicles, on September 21, 862, representatives of the tribes of the Slovenians, Krivichs, Chuds, and others (that is, not only Slavs, but also Finno-Ugric peoples), living in the northwestern part of modern Russia, invited three brothers to rule: Rurik, Sineus, and Truvor. The khans were told: «Our land is generous and rich, but there is no order in it. Come and rule us!» The date, of course, is approximate. But in the end it was accepted as the starting point for the foundation of Russian statehood, and over time Rurik’s name came to be revered as the founder of this state. And this continued until the 18th century.

Privatization of the past. How Putin and his entourage earned political capital from Russian history

At the beginning of July, historian Konstantin Pakhalyuk’s book «In Search of »Russian Antiquity«» was included in the longlist for the «Provetitel» prize. With the kind permission of the publisher Chișinău: The Historical Expertise, which republished the book after its de facto ban in Russia, we are publishing the chapter «State Memory Policy in the Conditions of the ‘Conservative Turn’ (2012 — early 2022)», which explains why cynical Russian politicians and bureaucrats needed events from long ago.

Forcing Peace. What Will Make Putin Stop the War in Ukraine

Team Zelensky still hopes that as soon as Russian citizens realize the state is unable to protect them, an uprising will begin in the country. However, these expectations fit poorly with how modern Russia is organized. Putin’s main vulnerability lies elsewhere.

165 years since the abolition of serfdom. Why this date went unnoticed in Russia

In addition to the anniversary of Alexander II's main reform, it was recently 145 years since his assassination. Yet in the Russian information space, there was hardly any mention of either the abolition of serfdom or the fate of the Tsar-Liberator: his policies do not align well with the beliefs of the current authorities.
