Stanford scientists showed that the human brain consists of two ancient independent systems
Scientists at the Stanford School of Medicine found that the human brain is not a single organ, but two ancient nervous systems that evolved independently over hundreds of millions of years. One of them is responsible for heartbeat, breathing, and reflexes, while the other is responsible for speech and abstract thinking; the study was published in Nature Neuroscience.
