Though it is toil and shame in vain. How Russia is waging hybrid war in Europe

Today, one can observe increasing activity of Russian special operations in Europe and expect it to intensify, since Ukrainian resistance relies primarily on European aid. The Kremlin is looking for ways to undermine this alliance no less than for military victories.

«Peace Pretenders». How the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh trusted Russia and ended up in exile

On the morning of September 19, 2023, Azerbaijani troops launched an offensive against the remnants of Karabakh, where Armenians were still living. Over the next couple of weeks, almost all of them left for Armenia along the long serpentine road known as the Lachin Corridor. And like almost everything in the Karabakh conflict, this event got two names. «Ethnic cleansing», according to the Armenian side, and «voluntary resettlement», according to the Azerbaijani side. The spectacle of a hundred thousand people leaving their homes forever shocked many. But for outside audiences, the shock was short-lived. Azerbaijan managed to convince everyone so quickly that what was happening was normal and inevitable that the topic disappeared from the agenda. It was also in Russia’s interest to sweep everything under the rug so that no one would ask an awkward question. The only thing left now is to make sense of what happened and not allow propaganda myths to take root.

The Last Secret of Trump Tower. How Donald Trump Stopped Being Afraid and Learned to Love Russia

If you want to find yourself at the center of Donald Trump’s financial empire, you need to go up 56th Street toward Central Park — and at the intersection with Fifth Avenue, a 202-meter, 58-story skyscraper will come into view. It ranks only 64th in New York by height, but it is no less famous than the Empire State Building. Construction of Trump Tower was completed in the fall of 1983, and since then the skyscraper has been a symbol of the success and power of the man whose name it bears. But this success story did not come without the KGB and its influence agents in the so-called «Russian mafia».

«Vostok Oil» – triumph or Potemkin village of «Rosneft»? What is wrong with the «new Samotlor»

On the weekend, Russian news agencies enthusiastically reported the emergence of a new oil province in Russia. Rosneft head Igor Sechin even compared the commissioning of the Vostok Oil project in Taimyr with the discovery of West Siberian oil in Soviet times. Let’s find out whether this is true.

How in the 1990s they wanted to create an independent republic in the Urals — and why nothing came of it

Exactly 35 years ago, the central authorities allowed Sverdlovsk enthusiasts to print their own francs. Today, the history of this exotic currency is linked to the Ural Republic — a project that seriously influenced all of Russian politics in the 1990s.

What Happened on the Barricades at the White House in August 1991: The Personal Experience of a «Most» Author

August 19-21, 1991, with each passing year, become an increasingly mythologized distant past. The current authorities generally prefer not to recall them at all, even though many of their representatives would never have reached their current heights without those historic days. A whole generation has already grown up that simply does not remember. And those who do remember are increasingly critical of these events. They say, well, what was achieved? Was it worth it? Believe me – it was.

The Kuril Paradox. Why Putin Flew to Iturup

Last week, the Russian leader visited the Kuril Islands for the first time in the 26 years of his rule. This demonstrative trip sharply worsened Russian-Japanese relations. On the other hand, it was supposed to please the Chinese comrades

Why Russia’s collapse seems impossible today

Speaking in Kazan on August 6, 1990, the head of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, Boris Yeltsin, uttered the classic phrase: «Take as much sovereignty as you can swallow». Back then, at the end of Perestroika, the Supreme Soviets of all the union and autonomous republics of the USSR proclaimed their state sovereignty. And some later declared independence as well. But does anyone really think that this experience can be repeated today?

Gulnara’s Gold: Why Tashkent Fears the Swiss Case Against the Daughter of Islam Karimov

The daughter of Uzbekistan’s first president, Islam Karimov, is once again in the spotlight of the world’s media. She has been summoned to a Swiss court in a corruption case. Bringing this case to a close would make it possible to return about a billion dollars to the country’s state budget. But in Tashkent they refused even to temporarily release Karimova from prison. The reason may not be only about money: many representatives of today’s Uzbek elite began their careers back under Islam Karimov and were, in one way or another, connected to his daughter. Her testimony is more dangerous for them than the loss of a billion.

Unbearable Lenin

Last week, few people remembered Vladimir Ulyanov’s (Lenin’s) birthday. Among those who did mark the date was the Turgenev Library in Paris: on April 22, the complete 55-volume collected works of the leader of the Russian Revolution were ceremoniously carried out from its shelves. In the past 30 years, not a single reader of the Turgenev Library had requested Lenin’s works—so the staff of the oldest Russian émigré library decided to bid a cheerful farewell to the Soviet past, making room for new books. Parisian supporters of Lenin tried to intervene in the process.

World War by the Laws of Postmodernism: Putin and Trump Against Global Progress

The general public often treats postmodernist practices with a certain lack of seriousness—since historical religious dogmas can be ironically and bizarrely combined with thoroughly cynical modern «business pragmatism.» However, the growing number of victims of these postmodernist wars is all too real.

Migrants: The End of Europe? Is It True That Multiculturalism Has Failed in Germany

We continue the conversation about the «demise of beautiful Europe under the onslaught of barbarian migrants with their alien culture.» Such views are quite popular even among post-Soviet emigrants who have lived in the West for a long time. For example, among many of the more than a million Soviet Germans and Jews who moved to Germany. They genuinely worry that «Germany is not what it used to be.» It's high time to talk about how the German system works when it comes to cultural imports.

Migrants: The End of Europe? Debunking Myths About Alien Crime and Terrorism Using Germany as an Example

In the previous text, we discussed that migrants in Europe are not «guests» at all. In Germany, where I (a migrant) live, 25-30% of all citizens have migrant roots. In this sense, Germany occupies in Europe the same place that America once did in the world. That is, a migrant is not a «wicked Chechen» who, in Lermontov's words, «crawls ashore, sharpening his dagger,» but an integral part of the German landscape. Now it is necessary to talk about the crime that migrants, according to the common opinion, bring with them (here, unfortunately, the common opinion is correct). And about the terrorism that is called «Islamic.»

Are Blue-Collar Jobs More Practical Than White-Collar? Why the Number of University Applicants in Russia Is Falling

The sharp drop in university admissions last year is easy to explain by government policy, where «loyalty is valued over intelligence.» But the reasons for the crisis in higher education run much deeper.

Russia is increasingly falling behind developed countries in terms of education. Is this a coincidence or a systemic policy?

From 2019 to 2024, the share of high school graduates entering universities in Russia dropped from 86% to 60%. In most developed countries during the same period, access to higher education continued to grow — since the modern economy demands increasingly complex skills.
