Tajik Transit in Question. Emomali Rahmon Won’t Relinquish Power, Even for His Son

Tajikistan is the only post-Soviet country where power has not changed hands since the early 1990s. The president long ago chose his eldest son, Rustam Emomali, as his successor, but the transfer of authority is constantly postponed.

The President of Kyrgyzstan has launched a large-scale purge of officials. The first to go was his friend—the head of the National Security Committee

After the resignation of the head of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan, Kamchybek Tashiev, President Sadyr Japarov has begun a sweeping purge of officials. The apparent goal is to bring the entire system of state governance under his control and become the sole center of power. Achieving this won’t be easy: over the past five years, Tashiev concentrated a significant share of managerial and economic decisions in his own hands, and it’s far from clear that Japarov will be able to fill this vacuum—or hold on to power.

A Hero of Our Time. In Memory of Alexei Navalny

Today marks two years since the death of Alexei Navalny. On the eve of the anniversary, five countries (the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands) issued an official statement that several independent laboratories had confirmed his poisoning with an extremely toxic substance—in essence, a chemical weapon. Only the Russian authorities had both the means and the motive to use it in the polar colony. On the anniversary of Navalny’s murder, the editorial team of «Most.Media» publishes a polemical essay by our reader I.B. from Russia. The anonymity requested by the author is necessary: the Russian authorities continue political repression against Navalny’s supporters even after his death.

Goodbye, America! Gorbachev’s «New Thinking» Lost to Trump’s MAGA

In January 1986, the newly elected General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, Mikhail Gorbachev, proposed that all countries in the world give up nuclear weapons. In 1988, in his book, he directly stated that universal human values are more important than class values. These ideas gave rise to the concept of «new thinking,» which changed much in international politics. Why didn’t these changes work, and why, forty years later, have we fallen into a historical abyss?

«Son, don’t trust this document—they will deceive you»

On December 5, 1994, Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum with three nuclear powers who guaranteed its security and independence in exchange for giving up its stockpile of nuclear weapons. This agreement was supposed to prevent any conflict between Ukraine and Russia. But it turned out to be a useless piece of paper.

Too Golden «Orda»

A «mask show» took place at the editorial office of Kazakhstan's largest independent media outlet, Orda.kz—just like in Russia in the 2000s. Let's figure out what happened: was it a private case of a «business conflict,» or a systematic attack on freedom of speech?

«War is a matter of time.» How residents of Lithuania’s Panemune are preparing for a Russian invasion

The smallest town in Lithuania, Panemune, is located in the west of the country. Across the river, the Russian town of Sovetsk is visible, where for several years a huge letter Z — the official symbol of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — has been displayed on the facade of one of the buildings. The two towns are connected by a pedestrian bridge — one of the few functioning crossings between Russia and the EU. Every day, the residents of Panemune look at that letter and the opposite shore.

Horizon of Erik Bulatov

In Paris, they said farewell to Erik Bulatov (1933-2025) — a brilliant artist whose works became the most recognizable symbol of Moscow conceptualism of the 1960s-1970s. He himself remained one of the leading figures of contemporary Russian art until his last days, even gaining the status of a classic and living abroad for more than 30 of his 92 years.

The Impossible Revolution

«All states were once self-proclaimed»

«I see no reason why democratic, free, independent Karelia, Ingria, Smalandia, or Amberland (even if some of these names still sound fantastical to some) couldn’t become part of the European Union or NATO in the foreseeable future,» says Ukrainian politician Oleg Magaletsky. A participant in the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Pride, in 2022 he founded the Forum of Free States Post-Russia — an international discussion platform whose participants aim for the breakup of the Russian Federation into several independent states. Most.Media publishes his conversation with Vadim Shtepa, editor-in-chief of the magazine Region.Expert.

Putin: Birth and Rebirth

Today turns 73. He intends to live—that is, to rule—until the end of his days, though it’s not yet clear whether they will be his own or yours. And if you want to drink champagne to the repose of his soul (in which, admittedly, there are doubts), you’ll have to wait another twenty or thirty years. And I’m not being ironic. I’m talking about a sensible life strategy.

«Trump, better take the Ural Federal District, we’ll pay you extra»

«Most.Media,» in collaboration with the magazine «Region.Expert,» launches a regular weekly review of events occurring in the fields of regional politics, economy, and culture. For many Russian media, as well as for free Russian-language publications outside Russia, this topic often still seems secondary and provincial. But such a snobbish-centralist approach has repeatedly failed — throughout various historical changes, Russia’s geographical borders have shifted, and many former provinces of the empire became independent countries. If we aim to look to the future, some promising trends need to be tracked and analyzed today.

«Put me back in prison!»: When patriotism turns into Stockholm syndrome

Dictatorships have a tendency to completely distort the phenomenon of patriotism. Natural human sympathies for the nature and culture of their country are replaced by demands for unconditional loyalty to the ruling regime. Saltykov-Shchedrin already noted this, reflecting on those who confuse the concepts of «Fatherland» and «Your Excellency.» Later, a grim Soviet joke appeared: when the state needs something from its citizens, it calls itself the «Motherland.» And always with a capital letter. Under such conditions, patriotism turns into a form of Stockholm syndrome, where hostages begin to sympathize with their captors.

The Only European. Why Philosopher Merab Mamardashvili Did Not Emigrate from the USSR

According to Mamardashvili, a human being is merely the potential to become a person. Preserving the person within the human requires constant effort. The same goes for Europe: to remain European, one must make an effort and cannot relax. A year after Mamardashvili’s passing, American philosopher Francis Fukuyama would declare the end of history, and Europe would relax. But history will return.

«She sank». Twenty-five years after the sinking of the Kursk submarine, Russian society has forgotten this catastrophe

The twenty-fifth anniversary of the tragedy of the nuclear submarine cruiser K-141 Kursk in the Barents Sea passed unnoticed. No memorial ceremonies, solemn speeches, monument unveilings, or film premieres. On the anniversary of the explosion on the Kursk (August 12), if one believes his official website, the head of state only spoke by phone with Kim Jong Un and held a meeting on economic issues. The censored segment of Runet got away with a few concise publications, and some authors described what happened in August 2000 as an «accident».
