House Built from the Roof. What Russian Exile Opposition and United Russia Have in Common

In June, Russian opposition figures led by Ilya Yashin created the Peaceful Russia party in Berlin, which stands against the war and Vladimir Putin. But its vision of the country’s future largely reproduces the same centralized model of power that the opposition itself usually criticizes

A Hero of Our Time. In Memory of Alexei Navalny

Today marks two years since the death of Alexei Navalny. On the eve of the anniversary, five countries (the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands) issued an official statement that several independent laboratories had confirmed his poisoning with an extremely toxic substance—in essence, a chemical weapon. Only the Russian authorities had both the means and the motive to use it in the polar colony. On the anniversary of Navalny’s murder, the editorial team of «Most.Media» publishes a polemical essay by our reader I.B. from Russia. The anonymity requested by the author is necessary: the Russian authorities continue political repression against Navalny’s supporters even after his death.

The Doctrine of Russian Nationalists. What’s New?

Last week, the «Russian Volunteer Corps» finally published its program and ideological doctrine. «Finally»—because this nationalist formation, which switched sides to Ukraine in February 2022, has long called on the Russian opposition to unite. Of course, by default—under the banners of the RVC. In short, hopes for a proper evolution of Russian nationalists have not come true.

«Russian Punitive Agencies Keep a Close Eye on Deportees from the US»

How can political émigrés who end up in American immigration jails be saved from extradition to Russia? What do FSB psychologists ask passengers on deportation flights during interrogations? And why don’t Western governments help Russian antiwar refugees? Multiple-entry visas as a signal

The European Commission's decision to stop issuing Schengen multiple-entry visas to Russian citizens caused a lot of noise and once again divided the opposition. It would be good to calmly look at what happened and why. And the main question is — what happens next. Even a complete ban on Russians visiting Europe will not stop the war in Ukraine

«Trump, better take the Ural Federal District, we’ll pay you extra»

«Most.Media,» in collaboration with the magazine «Region.Expert,» launches a regular weekly review of events occurring in the fields of regional politics, economy, and culture. For many Russian media, as well as for free Russian-language publications outside Russia, this topic often still seems secondary and provincial. But such a snobbish-centralist approach has repeatedly failed — throughout various historical changes, Russia’s geographical borders have shifted, and many former provinces of the empire became independent countries. If we aim to look to the future, some promising trends need to be tracked and analyzed today.

«Put me back in prison!»: When patriotism turns into Stockholm syndrome

Dictatorships have a tendency to completely distort the phenomenon of patriotism. Natural human sympathies for the nature and culture of their country are replaced by demands for unconditional loyalty to the ruling regime. Saltykov-Shchedrin already noted this, reflecting on those who confuse the concepts of «Fatherland» and «Your Excellency.» Later, a grim Soviet joke appeared: when the state needs something from its citizens, it calls itself the «Motherland.» And always with a capital letter. Under such conditions, patriotism turns into a form of Stockholm syndrome, where hostages begin to sympathize with their captors.
