«Our true priority is the elimination of the Muslim population»: how the Yugoslav general Ratko Mladić became a war criminal

More than 30 years after the massacre of Bosnian Muslims by Serbian nationalists in Srebrenica, the world is once again remembering those nightmare events — this week, their chief organizer died. At the same time, for modern Serbian far-right activists and their platonic Russian fellow travelers, Mladić, like the organizers of other mass killings in former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, remains a hero.

What Happened on the Barricades at the White House in August 1991: The Personal Experience of a «Most» Author

August 19-21, 1991, with each passing year, become an increasingly mythologized distant past. The current authorities generally prefer not to recall them at all, even though many of their representatives would never have reached their current heights without those historic days. A whole generation has already grown up that simply does not remember. And those who do remember are increasingly critical of these events. They say, well, what was achieved? Was it worth it? Believe me – it was.

«We understood that neither the Japanese nor the German governments would approve of our actions. But we did it anyway.»

In April 2026, in Vilnius, on the right bank of the Neris, next to the National Art Gallery, the cherry blossoms bloomed once again. Two hundred Japanese cherry trees, planted here a quarter of a century ago in the Chiune Sugihara Park, turned the riverbank into a cloud of white and pink. The name of the Japanese diplomat inscribed on a stone at the park entrance connects the history of this small Baltic country with the history of a Jewish community that was almost entirely destroyed. And it is also the story of a man who saved thousands of desperate people, defying bureaucratic orders.

«A Dangerous Idealist Ahead of His Time»: What Robespierre and Navalny Have in Common

Robespierre was a utopian who believed in lofty ideals and the possibility of free and just social change. This moral dimension of politics is almost an axiom underlying any discourse about revolution. Yet, his main «civil religion» remained faith in human virtue. That very idealism in politics is so lacking today.

How the Bolsheviks Made Peace with the Christmas Tree

The story of how the Soviet Grinch stole Christmas is telling in many ways. At first, the totalitarian regime shamelessly declared established family traditions to be barbaric. Then, after failing, Stalinism retreated a bit and, as a compromise, offered Soviet citizens a new holiday—with recognizable trappings, but stripped of its original meaning. Soon, the next generation came to perceive the Soviet New Year as an unshakable custom from time immemorial.

«Anyone who consciously chooses not to have children is a deserter.» How the Ceaușescu regime lost the war on abortion

In late December 1989, after a series of chance events, Nicolae Ceaușescu’s dictatorship in Romania collapsed within days. Over a quarter-century in power, he ruined the lives of hundreds of thousands. The Ceaușescu regime enforced an absurd cult of personality, brutally suppressed any dissent, and plunged the country into a poverty so dire it stood out even among socialist states. Throughout most of his rule, the so-called «Genius of the Carpathians» waged a ruthless campaign against abortion. What were the consequences for Romania and its people?

Crimea Is No Longer Ours. 105 Years Ago, Two Russias Said Goodbye Forever

Surely everyone interested in the country's past has at least once wondered: could it have become different? And if so, under what circumstances? One of the turning points — the events of November 1920 in Crimea. Those days saw the fall of the last anti-Bolshevik regime in the European part of the former empire, the Government of South Russia under Lieutenant General Pyotr Wrangel.

How the Louvre Was Robbed

A week after the daring robbery of the Louvre, the Paris police arrested two suspects: as the newspaper Le Figaro found out, one was preparing to board a flight to Algeria, the other planned to flee to Mali. The Paris prosecutor stated that premature disclosure of information about the arrests could harm the interests of the investigation. After all, many thefts of exhibits from the Paris museum remained unsolved for a long time.

«Away from Moscow! Give us Europe!» How Ukrainian authors revived national culture and perished in Stalinist repressions

The brief period of the rise of Ukrainian literature and art in the 1920s-30s is called the «Executed Renaissance.» The intellectual and creative atmosphere of those years was so enticing that emigrants fleeing the Civil War began moving to Ukraine. But the golden age ended as abruptly as it began. «Most.Media» recalls the tragic biographies of the participants in this movement.

Nepal: In Eternal Expectation of a Benevolent King

In September 2025, protesters from Nepal unexpectedly became the heroes of the global media. The ruling coalition of Marxist-Leninists, social democrats, and their allies attempted to block social networks, which sparked the «Generation Z Revolution.» Within days, the cabinet fell, and the interim prime minister — former Supreme Court judge Sushila Karki, the first woman in her position — was elected by protest activists in a Discord chat group.

«The Second Holocaust» or a Myth Against Israel? Is It True That the History of the Jewish State Began with Mass Killings and Deportations of Arabs

It cannot be said that before World War II, Palestinian Arabs unequivocally supported the expulsion of Jews back to Europe. Thousands of Muslims worked successfully at Jewish enterprises, rented land from Jews, traded with them, or simply coexisted peacefully with people of different faiths. The conditional point of no return can be marked as the summer of 1937.

The Path of Pétain: How a World War I Hero Surrendered France to the Germans During World War II

On August 15, 1945, the Supreme Court of France sentenced Marshal Pétain to death on charges of collusion with the enemy and treason. This historic verdict marked the end of the long journey of the World War I hero who became a symbol of French collaborationism with the Third Reich. It also marked the beginning of a harsh period of postwar purges and persecutions against French citizens who cooperated with the Vichy authorities. The personality of the marshal himself remains a subject of debate, speculation, and contradictions even 80 years later.

Why Russia failed to transform from an empire into a federation? And is it possible now?

Today, many representatives of national-regional movements in political exile have a clear disappointment in the Russian federal project, since it has repeatedly (both after 1918 and after 1991) led only to yet another revival of a centralist empire. Therefore, they find no common ground even with the new liberal opposition, which in its dreams of a beautiful future Russia sometimes oddly repeats Kremlin unitarist ideas.
