Is there an alternative to fascism for Germany after the triumph of the «Alternative for Germany»?

After the victory of the far right in the parliamentary elections in Saxony-Anhalt, special representative of the President of the Russian Federation Kirill Dmitriev wrote on his X: «I look forward to jointly building a great future together with ‘AfD’ — Germany’s most popular party». Russian authorities have indeed long supported this party, and elections in eastern Germany may affect the result of the federal elections to the Bundestag. However, not necessarily in favor of AfD.

«Siberianization» or Sinicization? Where Russia’s Turn to the East Will Lead

«Siberianization» reflects the Russian authorities’ anti-European course, in which they have chosen complete economic dependence on China instead of cooperation with the West. Meanwhile, in China, there have long been dreams of reclaiming Siberian territories, which are considered there to have been unjustly ceded to the Russian Empire.

«If Putin decides to attack Europe, he’ll need to do it while Trump is in power»

Until the early 2020s, Abbas Gallyamov was integrated into the Russian power structure: he worked as a speechwriter for Vladimir Putin when he was prime minister, as a political consultant in regional elections, and as deputy head of the administration of the president of Bashkortostan. But after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Gallyamov left for Israel, was labeled a foreign agent by the Russian Ministry of Justice, and last year was sentenced in absentia to eight years for «discrediting the Russian army.» We spoke with Abbas about the changing world order after Trump’s election, the prospects of a Russian invasion of an EU neighbor, and how friends of Putin’s younger daughter are quietly preparing to take power into their own hands.

What does Russia’s future look like after Putin? Scientific Director of the Levada Center, Lev Gudkov, responds

Sociologist Lev Gudkov has been studying public attitudes in Russia since the time of Perestroika. In the late 1980s, he worked at the All-Union Center for the Study of Public Opinion, from which he left in the early 2000s along with Yuri Levada’s team. From 2006 to 2021, Gudkov headed the Levada Center—the largest independent organization conducting sociological surveys in Russia—and then became its scientific director. Both the Levada Center and Gudkov himself have been designated as foreign agents by the Russian Ministry of Justice. Drawing on years of sociological surveys of post-Soviet society and the historical experience of countries that went through fascism in the 20th century, we spoke with the renowned researcher about the most likely scenario for Russia’s future.

«Son, don’t trust this document—they will deceive you»

On December 5, 1994, Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum with three nuclear powers who guaranteed its security and independence in exchange for giving up its stockpile of nuclear weapons. This agreement was supposed to prevent any conflict between Ukraine and Russia. But it turned out to be a useless piece of paper.

No, we will not all die. What the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded for this year

This year’s Nobel Prize in Economics was shared between economic historian Joel Mokyr and the creators of the «creative destruction» model, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt. And this is good news for those who fear that AI will destroy humanity or that China will conquer the world. For Russia, the laureates’ works contain an answer to why a country with talented scientists and engineers is lagging behind in this race.

The war has won. Why Putin decided to «ground» the economy

Last week, during the Eastern Economic Forum, acknowledged problems with the slowdown of the Russian economy but added that victory over inflation is more important – supposedly, it's better for the people. However, the issue is not the welfare of the citizens. The continuation of the war requires increased spending on it. And here, strict monetary policy is unavoidable. This will result in the labor of the majority of Russian citizens becoming cheaper.

At seven in the evening after the war. What will happen to the Russian economy if peace is declared

The problem of Russia's return to peace is multi-layered. One layer is the reverse structural restructuring, partial or complete. The second is the preservation and lifting of sanctions and other restrictions. The third is the social consequences, related not only to the absorption by the labor market of more than half a million former fighters but also to disruptions in business groups tied to the war.

Looking Back at Trump and Putin. The European Union Adopted the 17th Sanctions Package Against Russia.

The latest EU sanctions package took a long time to adopt. Firstly, due to the usual resistance from Hungary, which is always against restrictions on Russian oil and gas that it itself uses. Secondly, EU officials faced a tricky task: not to anger Donald Trump with too harsh sanctions—he could accuse the EU of sabotaging his «magnificent deal» with Russia—and to signal to Vladimir Putin that making peace would be cheaper than continuing the war. ‍
