«The Battle of Algiers» has been considered the most influential political film for 60 years now. The resonance after the release of this film, shot in the traditions of Italian neorealism, sparked a wave of decolonial movements in different countries. Public interest in the lives of celebrities has always been high, and in the era of the open world, the internet, and social media it has surged even higher. No wonder the popularity of memoirs, interviews, and documentaries about famous people has grown so much — in short, any nonfiction. The personality of an individual has become more interesting than the context in which that person lived.

For many years after the Second World War, the French stubbornly pretended that their country had been a territory of Resistance during the occupation, and directors with a critical view of this myth were virtually ostracized. The French public has only now grown ready for a candid discussion of this topic: three films are arriving in national release at once — about De Gaulle, his supporters, opponents, and «apolitical» conformists. The latter, unfortunately, are usually in the majority.

When information appeared about Vincent Garenq’s upcoming film, one immediately thought it would be about freedom of speech, about radical Islamism, about society’s fear of it. But the director chose a different angle — this is a film about how the state does not protect its citizen, who is simply doing his job

A gorgeous golden autumn somewhere in central Russia. September 2022. The war started six months ago, mobilization is underway, and people are confused. Those who are quicker, who have the means and the foresight, have already formed huge lines at Verkhny Lars. Meanwhile, in a luxurious villa on the lakeshore, a prosperous family lives — a successful entrepreneur, his beautiful wife, and their teenage son. The villa is beautiful and wealthy, but depressingly dull. Aside from the beauty of nature, everything here is boring. And despite the tender kisses of the characters, the air is poisoned by a lack of love. That distinct Russian lovelessness, which Zvyagintsev explored in his previous film and knows so well.

The Woody Allen case, who participated online in a certain Moscow film week and gave a video interview to Fyodor Bondarchuk, once again raised the question of moral and immoral behavior during a military and humanitarian catastrophe, about detachment from events and involvement in them, about toxicity—or, on the contrary, the necessity of cultural and interpersonal contacts.

Boris Akunin has been sentenced in absentia in Russia to 14 years, Dmitry Bykov declared wanted: two of the most important Russian writers have been subjected to exemplary criminal repressions. This is a milestone and another signal, as they say, for the entire intelligentsia. Although what signals are there, everything is already clear. Rather, this is a milestone for the repressive apparatus itself, which is worth noting.
