An unknown object flew over Lithuania and headed to the Kaliningrad Region

Early on the morning of September 13, an unknown object crossed Lithuanian airspace, flew over the country for about 60–70 km, and headed to Russia’s Kaliningrad Region. Later that same day, a yellow air danger level was declared in Vilnius and several districts around the capital because of another possible drone.

The Seimas Committee on Law and Order of Lithuania on Wednesday supported the initiative to remove Article 137 from the Constitution, which prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons and bases of other states in the country. «Don’t win. Don’t fight. Don’t give up.» The Story of Užupis — Vilnius’ Bohemian District

Užupis is one of the strangest places in Europe. This city district has its own Constitution, president, ministry of foreign affairs, currency, anthem, and more than five hundred ambassadors around the world. All of this is not entirely serious—it's a game, an art performance, a collective joke that has become part of the city’s identity. But it’s not just a joke, either.

«Chernobyl Way»: A catastrophe that hasn’t ended — for Belarus or its neighbors

Forty years ago, the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. Belarus, which bore the brunt of the disaster, still lives with its consequences. Over the years, the annual «Chernobyl Way» rally has transformed from a mournful procession into a form of civic protest: first against the suppression of the truth, then against the construction of a new nuclear plant, and now — against a system where people's voices mean nothing.

«We understood that neither the Japanese nor the German governments would approve of our actions. But we did it anyway.»

In April 2026, in Vilnius, on the right bank of the Neris, next to the National Art Gallery, the cherry blossoms bloomed once again. Two hundred Japanese cherry trees, planted here a quarter of a century ago in the Chiune Sugihara Park, turned the riverbank into a cloud of white and pink. The name of the Japanese diplomat inscribed on a stone at the park entrance connects the history of this small Baltic country with the history of a Jewish community that was almost entirely destroyed. And it is also the story of a man who saved thousands of desperate people, defying bureaucratic orders.

«Russia is recruiting not very smart, but highly charged youth within the European Union for its dark deeds»

Russian activists are not always safe even after emigrating. Persecution can continue beyond Russia’s borders—including at the hands of informal groups acting in line with Russian propaganda. This is what sex educator and LGBTQ+ activist Sasha Kazantseva faced in Lithuania: last summer, she began receiving threats, and people associated with a homophobic group targeting queer teens and activists came to her home. Since then, Kazantseva has been seeking a response from Lithuanian authorities so that such cases do not go unpunished. In an interview with «Most,» Sasha Kazantseva explains how this pressure works, why it’s not an isolated case, and what is happening to queer people from Russia—both inside the country and abroad.

«We can still resist this divide.» Noize MC, Naoko and other political artists on life and creativity in exile

Borders between Russia and Europe are closing, and censorship is intensifying — how can bridges be built between those who left and those who stayed? Musicians, artists, activists, and journalists who left Russia after the invasion of Ukraine discussed this in Vilnius. We publish their conversation.

Non-Imperial History: The Zaporozhian Cossacks. The Beginning

The history of the formation of the Cossacks in the territories of modern Ukraine and Russia had common features and causes. But there was also one fundamental difference. While in Russia the Cossacks are considered a separate, specific part of the Russian people (although some Cossacks categorically define themselves as a separate ethnic group), in Ukraine they are an integral and, without quotation marks, state-forming part of the Ukrainian nation. So the words of the anthem, «І покажем, що ми, браття, козацького роду» («And we will show that we, brothers, are of the Cossack lineage»), are not just a beautiful metaphor.

«If Putin decides to attack Europe, he’ll need to do it while Trump is in power»

Until the early 2020s, Abbas Gallyamov was integrated into the Russian power structure: he worked as a speechwriter for Vladimir Putin when he was prime minister, as a political consultant in regional elections, and as deputy head of the administration of the president of Bashkortostan. But after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Gallyamov left for Israel, was labeled a foreign agent by the Russian Ministry of Justice, and last year was sentenced in absentia to eight years for «discrediting the Russian army.» We spoke with Abbas about the changing world order after Trump’s election, the prospects of a Russian invasion of an EU neighbor, and how friends of Putin’s younger daughter are quietly preparing to take power into their own hands.

«War is a matter of time.» How residents of Lithuania’s Panemune are preparing for a Russian invasion

The smallest town in Lithuania, Panemune, is located in the west of the country. Across the river, the Russian town of Sovetsk is visible, where for several years a huge letter Z — the official symbol of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — has been displayed on the facade of one of the buildings. The two towns are connected by a pedestrian bridge — one of the few functioning crossings between Russia and the EU. Every day, the residents of Panemune look at that letter and the opposite shore.

«We thought we could wait out the war ‘under the Russians,’ but ended up in Stalinist Bolshevism.» On the 85th anniversary of the Soviet annexation of the Baltics

In recent years, some in the Russian public have been strongly tempted to engage in victim-blaming regarding the events of 1939-1940. The idea goes that the Baltic peoples chose their own fate: they signed the treaties, let the Red Army in, and voted for pro-Soviet candidates in elections. Who else can they blame for this but their own short-sighted and cowardly governments? Indeed, formally the Stalinist regime at the time did nothing that the authorities of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia did not allow. But in reality, the Soviet leadership fully understood the true meaning of these documents and procedures.
